| Choosing an Insurer |
16 Feb |
When purchasing a car it is important that you be properly insured from the moment you drive the car from the car showroom. It might seem like a great idea to go with the cheapest insurance option automatically, however, this might not always offer the best cover. When choosing an insurer, it is important to pay attention to the small print, and here are some other things you should pay attention to:
• Cheap deals have strings attached such as a very high compulsory excess. Check this out.
• Make sure that the insurance company is regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
• Know the difference between comprehensive insurance and third party insurance and what insurance needs you have. Third party is the bare minimum insurance you can purchase but it offers the bare minimum coverage. This will only cover the cost of damage to the other car and you will have to cover the cost of repairing any damage to your own car.
• Does the insurance policy come with a restricted mileage allowance?
• Are there any other strings attached? Personal circumstances can greatly affect the contribution you might have to make towards any claim, make sure you know what these are ahead of time.
• Know the excess of the policy. The amount you will have to pay due to the amount that an insurer withholds from any claim can vary. It is usually £100 but it is best to check.
• Is there a limit for legal and medical expenses?
• Is a courtesy car provided if your car is off the road while it is repaired? Is there an extra charge for this?
• Does the policy cover you for driving abroad?
• Will premiums increase if you gain any points on your licence?
• What is the maximum amount of no-claims bonus available?
Buying insurance is extremely important and asking these questions should help you get the coverage you need at a premium you can afford.
